I recently accompanied my future sister-in-law and her entourage on a wedding dress shopping mission.

We started at Kleinfeld’s, the New York-based bridal salon made famous on TLC’ Enjoy your shopping for cheap wedding dresses,prom dresses,evening dresses, cocktail dresses and more other style dresses 2012s “Say Yes to the Dress.” I had never seen the show, but was familiar with the concept of brides tearfully exclaiming that they had found “The One” -- that would be the gown ball gowns , not the guy -- and forking over exorbitant sums of money for piles of taffeta and lace. But it wasn’t the breathtaking gowns, although there were plenty, which were the most memorable. It was the overwhelming selection of ugly couture. Kleinfeld’s bills itself as a premier salon with an enormous selection. In between watching my brother’s fiancée don one gorgeous dress after another, I kept an eye on the other brides, many of whom do not share her good fashion sense. Some dresses were simply too boring to warrant the price tags dangling from them. Others were downright horrendous. I only wish I had been able to videotape the horrors.

As I wondered which 5-year-old had been handed snub-nosed scissors to cut out the tiny squares of fabric sewn all over one particularly hideous gown, my eye zeroed in on the price tag. This arts and crafts project gone awry was being sold for $5,300, and the woman wearing it was tearfully saying “I think this is my dress,” as her flock of loved ones nodded their approval. I couldn’t take it anymore. I averted my eyes to the opposite corner of the room, where I was suddenly accosted with a scene of entirely too much flesh on display. I never thought of a wedding gown as something that could be trashy, but this one had crossed the line. It was ridiculously low-cut, poufy and accented in every fabric imaginable. The bride was swathed in tulle and beading, and to top it all off, the entire dress looked gray.

I breathed a sigh of relief when she disappeared and returned in a gown that was still ugly, but an improvement. I can’t help but wonder, what is wrong with the sales staff? I understand they can’t insult the shoppers by telling them flat-out that certain dresses are just all wrong. But can’t they gently encourage them to try some more flattering styles? Some of these dresses don’t even look good on the hanger, so I’m not sure what draws brides to them in the first place.

As for my future sister-in-law, she actually ended up finding “the one” bridal lace bridal lace at another smaller, friendlier salon in the city where there weren’t any over-the-top dresses on display.
